Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT DOES A PHYSICAL THERAPIST DO?

Physical therapists are specialists in the musculoskeletal system.  They work with their patients to help them achieve their goals, whether that means recovering from an injury or surgery, minimizing pain or improving their quality of life.

DOES PHYSICAL THERAPY HURT?

Physical therapy is meant to help your pain and not make it worse, however you may experience some temporary soreness and discomfort as you strengthen and stretch new muscles.  Remember to keep your physical therapist informed about how you are feeling before, during and after treatments.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY FIRST PHYSICAL THERAPY APPOINTMENT?

During your first appointment or initial evaluation your therapist will review your health history, your reason for seeking physical therapy and your goals.  The therapist will complete a thorough exam, assessing your strength, range of motion, balance, and walking mechanics.  Together, you will create a plan of care to assist you in meeting your goals and improving your function.

DO I NEED A REFERRAL FROM A DOCTOR TO MAKE A PHYSICAL THERAPY APPOINTMENT?

No referral is needed for a physical therapy appointment.  Although insurance plans differ, anyone can arrange an evaluation by a physical therapist without a physician’s referral or prescription.  This is called direct access.

WHAT INSURANCES DO YOU ACCEPT?

We are in-network with most major insurance companies including UPMC, MEDICARE, AETNA, UNITED HEALTHCARE, CIGNA and ANTHEM BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD.  If you have a specific question about your coverage please give us a call and we would be glad to help you.

<p”>We like to plan for an hour and a half for your initial evaluation so that we can complete a thorough exam, start treatment and provide you with a home program.  Each visit after will last approximately 45-60 minutes.</p”>

HOW LONG WILL I NEED PT?

Every patient is different and therefore the time they will need PT is different.  We will work together to develop a specific plan of care to meet your goals.  Typically patients are seen 2 times a week for 4 weeks.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY FIRST PT APPOINTMENT?

Please arrive 10 minutes early to complete the initial paperwork if you are not able to download the forms from our website.  We ask that you bring with your insurance card, a list of all your current medications, the script provided to you by the doctor (if you have one), and any relevant protocols or instructions the doctor may have given you.
